Stephanie Stem Walls was elected president of the East Cleveland City School District Board of Education at the board’s Jan. 12 organizational meeting and was immediately administered the oath of office.
The board also confirmed Dr. Mary Rice as vice president and swore in newly elected members Mary Sanders, Lisha Eldermire and Shireine Fountain. The organizational session included roll-call voting for officers and assignment of committee chairs and co-chairs for education, finance, welfare and public relations, and building and grounds.
The vote for president required a roll-call process after nominations for incumbent Dr. Mary Rice and challenger Stephanie Stem Walls. Following discussion and a second round of voting, the board declared Walls the president with a three-vote majority. Dr. Rice was later elected vice president in a separate roll-call vote with three yes votes.
After taking the oath, President Walls presided over the remainder of the meeting and led the board through committee sign-ups and the calendar for regular and work-session meetings; most committees will meet the third Tuesday of each month, and the finance committee will meet the third Monday. The board also agreed to schedule regular board meetings at 6 p.m., beginning with the Jan. 12 meeting.
The board’s roll call at the outset recorded Stephanie Stem Walls, Dr. Mary Rice, Shireine Fountain, Mary Sanders and Lisha Eldermire as present.
The meeting moved on after officers and committees were set.
