The East Cleveland City School District Board of Education on May 11 approved multiple resolutions covering facilities work, budget items, and personnel appointments.
In buildings and grounds business the board approved a previously discussed contract for a full roof replacement at W. H. Kerr Middle School, with the cost quoted in the meeting materials as $848,809.16. The board also approved masonry repairs at the Chambers Community Empowerment Center, described in the materials as a roughly $34,000 scope of tuckpointing, lintel and window-frame repair and caulking to halt interior water infiltration.
The board authorized the district to participate in the Ohio School Council electricity purchase program, an annual consortium arrangement the district uses to secure lower energy pricing. A presenter described the arrangement as a recurring, annual sign-up used by many school districts to reduce energy costs.
On finance items the board accepted the district's March 2026 monthly financial report and approved the East Cleveland Public Library's alternate tax budget for 2027, presented to the board by the library treasurer. The board also accepted a $10,000 donation tied to the Cleveland Browns Change Maker Award; Superintendent Dr. Pedigrew said the money will be used for student scholarships: "Not too long ago, we received the Cleveland Browns Change Maker Award. And as a result of the award, there was a $10,000 amount that can be used toward scholarship students," he said.
Superintendent recommendations to appoint certified summer positions and other staff were moved and approved by the board. The meeting introduced new hires in public remarks, including a new digital design coordinator and a principal recruit for Shaw High School (introductions and hiring steps are reported separately). The board also approved professional leave requests and a set of student-managed activities, including a trip for 40 performing-arts students to Detroit.
Most motions were moved, seconded, and passed via the board's online voting process during the meeting. The board adopted the district's 2026'27 school calendar and approved the award of Shaw High School diplomas for the class of 2026. The superintendent provided a brief tally for the posted graduates (86 of an indicated 96, described in the meeting as about an 89.5% rate based on posted report cards).
The board set June meeting dates, noted a special meeting scheduled for May 12, and adjourned the May 11 session.
