School committee adopts multi‑year goals, adds safety and workforce indicators

On June 15 the Lewiston School Committee adopted multi‑year goals to guide board priorities and district strategy, voting 7–0 after members suggested and accepted several edits.
Administration presented draft goals covering school safety, family and community engagement, academic success and an approach to education that emphasizes career readiness. During discussion members proposed edits to refine indicators of success: changing the goal wording from "safe" to "safer learning environment," adding a measure to track staff injuries caused by student incidents, and adding an indicator to capture the number of students leaving with vocational or certification credentials. Members also recommended removing the word "events" from a community‑engagement indicator to broaden the measure beyond attendance at school functions.
Superintendent Jake Langler said that goals are intended as a multi‑year guide but will be reviewed annually and will inform superintendent workplans, budgets and strategic discussions. A motion to adopt the goals with the discussed edits passed unanimously.
Members flagged the need for clear indicators and for monitoring unintended consequences (for example, under‑reporting of incidents if targets are strictly numeric). The committee agreed to incorporate the edits and requested follow‑up reporting as strategies and measures are developed.
