Waukesha City staff on Oct. 21 gave a status report on the Central City Master Plan, summarizing street reconstructions, streetscape investments and downtown activation efforts completed since the plan’s adoption in 2012.
Staff described Clinton Street’s street‑narrowing and new sidewalk dining areas, conversion of one‑way streets to two‑way as part of "complete streets" goals, and streetscape elements such as planters, benches and lighting that staff said have encouraged reinvestment. Staff also highlighted the programming of an events plaza (used for seasonal events including Riverside Rhythms and the city’s night‑of‑lights) and downtown marketing after the dissolution of the former business improvement district.
Since 2012, staff said, several infill housing projects and historic preservation efforts have added residential units downtown, and the city has used incentives and loans to support rehabilitation and activation. Staff said the implementation update will be split across meetings, with future sessions focused on neighborhood implementation and setting RDA priorities for next steps.
Committee members thanked staff for the update and asked follow‑up questions about specific streets and upcoming planning commission reviews; staff said additional neighborhood details will be presented at a subsequent meeting.
