The Black Hawk County Board approved a proclamation recognizing Juneteenth as a county holiday and invited residents to attend community observances June 19–21 at Sullivan Park in Waterloo. The proclamation noted Juneteenth’s historical origin, the county’s tradition of celebrating the day, and that 2026 marks the county’s 31st celebration.
Latana, a Juneteenth community organizer, described planned events including a community talent night, vendor fair, music from Clarence Williams and the Rise of the Suns, youth performances, sports and family activities. "If you're not doing anything, come out to any of these events or all of them," Latana said, encouraging residents to attend and support local vendors; the organizer said there are roughly 35 vendors so far and that past years saw more than 50.
Board members took a commemorative photo after a motion and vote approving the proclamation and resolution. The board also asked staff to provide event information to the public and noted the county recognizes Juneteenth as a day to reflect on history and recommit to equity and civic participation.
