Council negotiators described the agreement as the result of multiple bargaining sessions that updated outdated language, aligned the contract with the town’s fiscal year and addressed wages. "We came to a kind of agreement on contract," said Jack, a council negotiator; staff estimated the base‑wage portion of the bargaining unit will increase by about $50,000 over the 30‑month term, excluding overtime.
Councilors discussed budget pressure during the upcoming budget season but approved the agreement by voice vote. The contract also includes sign‑on/transfer language intended to recruit trained officers without the town incurring academy training costs in certain cases.
The council directed staff to fold the estimated increases into the 2027–2028 budget and to track any overtime implications; final budget adjustments and public budget hearings will precede appropriation of additional funds.
