Union City agrees to pursue Broadband Ready Communities designation; solicitor to draft zoning changes

Union City Borough Council agreed July 9 to pursue a Broadband Ready Communities designation through Erie Area Council of Governments (EACOG) and to hold a required public meeting before adopting a resolution.
Borough Manager Cindy Wells said EACOG would serve as the borough’s Municipal Broadband Champion, which could help attract additional internet service providers and create more options for residents. Councilor Kerns moved and Councilor Joyce seconded a motion to proceed with the public meeting and the resolution process; the motion carried unanimously.
Council also discussed proposed zoning ordinance amendments. Skill games of chance changes had been previously presented and approved; council considered allowing above-ground pools on vacant adjoining lots, and permitting sheds up to 144 square feet on gravel bases, skids or pillars that are removable and with no adjoining-property-line setback (front yard setback would still apply). Solicitor Tim Wachter was asked to draft suggested zoning ordinance language for council review.
Separately, the Street Supervisor provided counts for parking if angled parking is used in Municipal Lot #2; council indicated it wanted to remove front-end parking in that lot and asked the Solicitor to prepare a proposed amended parking ordinance for final review.
The council did not adopt the zoning or parking ordinance amendments at the meeting; the items were referred to the Solicitor for drafting and return to council.
