Trussville board recognizes Huskies after dual Class 7A state championships

The Trussville City Schools Board of Education used its June meeting to honor Hewitt‑Trussville High School's softball and baseball teams for claiming Class 7A state championships, presenting city proclamations and inviting players and coaches to the podium.
Athletic Director Lance Walker told the board the softball team finished the season 49-10-1, won the area and North regional crowns and captured the Class 7A state title by winning six games at the state tournament. "This was the first year in 7A history that a school has won baseball and softball state championship in the same year," Walker said, calling the accomplishment "a tremendous accomplishment." He praised the teams' work ethic and the support of parents and staff.
Coach Taylor Bert accepted a proclamation on behalf of the softball program and introduced players. Coach Jeff Malden, who led the baseball team, described his squad as "unselfish," and the proclamation read at the meeting noted the baseball team's 34-9 season and a two‑game sweep of Auburn High School in the championship series.
Board members, the mayor and city council representatives were on hand for both proclamations. In remarks throughout the recognitions the board highlighted the schools' emphasis on player development and community engagement; the board also invited retired staff and several retirees to be recognized later in the meeting.
