Cabot — The Cabot City Council on Oct. 20 adopted three ordinances relating to tax‑liens and the city’s millage rate for 2026 collection and took procedural votes to meet statutory deadlines.
Ordinance No. 29 of 2025 and Ordinance No. 31 of 2025, both described as ordinances creating, certifying and confirming tax liens against properties for funds expended to remedy code violations, each received final approval after motions to adopt passed by a 7‑0 roll‑call vote.
Ordinance No. 30 of 2025, which would set the millage tax rates to be collected in 2026, was presented on second reading. Council moved to waive the third reading so the ordinance could be sent to the court by the Nov. 1 deadline and then adopted the ordinance by unanimous roll call. Given the filing deadline, the council also adopted an emergency clause to expedite the ordinance’s effectiveness.
Why it mattered: The millage ordinance sets the tax rates that govern property-tax collections next year; the tax‑lien ordinances formalize the city’s liens for costs expended to correct code violations. Council described the emergency clause as necessary to meet filing deadlines.
Votes and procedure: Each ordinance and the emergency clause were approved on roll‑call votes that registered seven affirmative votes and no negatives. The council followed standard procedure of moving to read ordinances by title only and then taking roll‑call votes on adoption.
What’s next: With votes recorded, staff will proceed with required filings related to millage rates and record the liens described in the ordinances.
