One‑person weights and measures program seeks competitive salary adjustment to retain staff

Marcus Gabrieli, the city’s Sealer of Weights and Measures, described rebuilding the department after the state had done the work for a decade. Hired in January 2023, he said he is a department of one responsible for inspecting scales, gasoline meters and other measurements, collecting inspection revenues, and managing administrative duties.

Gabrieli said his operating budget is essentially flat for FY27 but noted a salary adjustment of $12,283 (about 18.27%) was agreed with the union and approved by the mayor following a Commonwealth‑wide salary study. He described the adjustment as necessary to remain competitive and avoid losing trained personnel to other jurisdictions.

Council members thanked him for the work and asked about line items such as clothing and equipment for field work; Gabrieli explained the clothing line covers safety footwear, high‑visibility gear and seasonal outerwear. No changes were made during the hearing; he told councilors he is working within the current budget while monitoring future needs.
