Canal Winchester council elects Amick president, Moore vice president and affirms committee assignments

Council Member Laurie Amick was elected council president and Rick Moore was elected vice president during Canal Winchester’s city council organizational meeting on Jan. 5, 2026, following the swearing-in of members and a brief executive session on appointments.
The meeting opened at 6:00 p.m. in City Hall Council Chambers. After a roll call confirmed seven members present, oaths of office were administered: Mayor Joe Steager administered the oaths to Laurie Amick and David Payne; Ohio State Representative Richard Brown administered the oath to Hanna Detwiler; and Susan R. Stedman administered the oath to Patrick Shea.
City Council President Boggs called for nominations for council officers. Council Member Patrick Shea nominated Amick, saying, “I nominate Mrs. Amick.” With no other nominations, the clerk conducted a roll-call vote; all seven members recorded “Y,” affirming Amick as council president. Alec McLaughlin nominated Rick Moore for vice president, stating, “I’d like to nominate Rick Moore.” The council again voted unanimously to confirm Moore.
Earlier in the agenda councilors debated whether to hold an executive session before officer elections. A motion by Rick Moore, seconded by Alec McLaughlin, to amend the agenda and move the executive session passed unanimously. Council then voted to adjourn to executive session under Ohio Revised Code Section 121.22(G)(1) to consider appointments of public officials; that motion, moved by Will Bennett and seconded by Rick Moore, also passed 7–0. The council left for executive session at 6:09 p.m. and returned at 6:26 p.m.
Following the executive session, the council reviewed and affirmed committee assignments and external board representatives. The slate approved included: Rules Committee (Patrick Shea, Hanna Detwiler, David Payne); Canal Winchester Chamber of Commerce representative (Alec McLaughlin); Canal Winchester Human Services representative (Patrick Shea); Canal Winchester Joint Recreation District board members (Will Bennett, Rick Moore); Destination: Canal Winchester representative (David Payne); and Sustainability Commission board member (Hanna Detwiler). Council Member Patrick Shea moved to affirm the appointments; Will Bennett seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
A motion to adjourn, made by Will Bennett and seconded by Rick Moore, passed 7–0 and the meeting adjourned at 6:31 p.m. No formal appointments from the executive session were disclosed in the public minutes.
