Canal Winchester City Council met Monday, Jan. 5, 2026, at City Hall Council Chambers and approved two sets of Dec. 15, 2025 meeting minutes by voice vote. Councilmember Alec McLaughlin moved to approve each set of minutes; Will Bennett seconded both motions. Both motions carried with six votes in favor — McLaughlin, Bennett, Detwiler, Moore, Shea and Amick — and one abstention from David Payne.
Mayor Steager opened with New Year’s greetings and welcomed newly seated councilmembers David Payne and Hanna Detwiler, saying the Mayor’s Office looks forward to working with the council in the coming year. Finance Director Jackson told the council the city’s books were balanced as of the meeting: “We did end up balancing our books already — we accomplished that today,” Jackson said, and reminded members to request business cards if needed.
Council received brief staff reports from the city administrator, law director and the Fairfield County Sheriff’s representative and reviewed upcoming calendar items and board/commission schedules. The meeting closed after a motion to adjourn by Councilmember Patrick Shea, seconded by Will Bennett; the adjournment passed unanimously at 7:16 p.m.
