The Development & Government Relations Committee on June 15 approved a license agreement that allows Valley Bike to install a roughly 12-by-8-foot station pad on property managed by the Holyoke Housing Authority, and will forward the item to the full City Council for final ratification.
Matthew Mainville, executive director of the Holyoke Housing Authority, told the committee the partnership with Valley Bike and the city would place the station near Cherry Street and Liry, adjacent to Bowden Village and close to the new community college. “Based off of what happens this evening, I'll bring it to my board tomorrow for full ratification,” Mainville said. He added there is no cost to taxpayers for the station; installation is expected to be completed by the Department of Public Works and the purchase is funded through a MassGaming fund grant.
Councillors praised the project as an accessibility improvement for nearby residents who previously faced long walks to downtown bike stations. The committee approved the license by roll-call and directed staff to place the agreement on the full council agenda the following evening.
What happens next: The Holyoke Housing Authority board will consider formal ratification and the full City Council will take a final vote at its next meeting.
