Airport reports hangar rentals and eclipse visitors; council hears Sequoia Dam monitoring update

Cherokee Village — At its June 26 meeting, the city council heard a report from the airport commission and an update on Sequoia Dam monitoring being conducted by the Special Improvement District (SID).
Tony Stal Smith, who said he has served on the airport commission almost two years, told the council the airport hired a new general manager, completed three new box hangars with waiting lists, and has taxiway work and terminal planning in a five-year improvement plan. He said the airport hosted about 46 planes for the recent eclipse, sold parking and fuel and generated positive publicity and some ancillary revenue.
Separately, Council member Heather described a meeting with SID leadership on Sequoia Dam. Engineers have completed geotechnical drilling (six borings, three on the roadway and three at the toe) to support installing piezometers — six-inch PVC tubes to monitor groundwater at depth — similar to equipment already at nearby lakes. SID expects engineering results in early September to October and said it has a three-year window to demonstrate regulatory compliance; Heather said the city will evaluate whether to seek state assistance if repair costs are substantial.
No formal action was taken; council members said they would assist with outreach and citizen information if SID's findings indicate larger repair needs.
