Cherokee Village mayor warns of 90-day closure at Flathead/Cherokee Road bridge, discusses potential trail extension grant

The Cherokee Village mayor told the council March 20 that a contractor will close the northernmost bridge at the Flathead Drive and Cherokee Road intersection beginning July 7 for what the mayor said will likely be about a 90-day closure.
Mayor Steven R. Rose said the closure is scheduled to avoid the July 4 holiday and noted that during the closure the intersection’s primary access will be blocked; he advised residents who live on Flathead Drive to plan for limited access. The mayor said the only local bypass would be through a private parking lot and that access through that lot will be subject to the private owners’ permission.
Separately, the mayor described work with local property owner James Gilly to pursue a state parks grant (identified as a Great Strides program through the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism) to extend trails at Tohive Park. The mayor said Gilly has offered a right-of-way around his property and that an engineering firm has proposed doing the work with no upfront cost to the city if the grant is awarded; the proposed extension was described as roughly 5,000 feet (about a mile).
The council did not take formal action on either item at the meeting; the mayor urged residents to plan around the July bridge closure and to contact City Hall with questions.
