Cherokee Village briefed on Waste Connections CPI increase and landfill tipping fee hike

Mayor Steven R. Rose reported that Waste Connections has applied a Consumer Price Index adjustment of 3.11% to residential trash collection, which the mayor described as roughly $22 per unit per quarter. The existing contract runs through the end of the year; under the contract Cherokee Village retains a 10% discount. Officials said the city will evaluate contract options during the year and may renegotiate when the contract expires.
The mayor also reported that tipping rates at the regional landfill will increase by about 6.6%. Council members and staff said they worry the higher landfill costs could lead to more illegal dumping within Cherokee Village and asked residents to report dumping incidents to city hall.
No formal action was taken at the meeting; council members discussed monitoring the budgetary impact and preparing for contract negotiations later in the year.
