Cherokee Village fire department to apply for $100,000 block grant; public hearing planned

The Cherokee Village Fire Department announced on Aug. 21 that it will apply for a $100,000 block grant and will hold a public hearing 30 minutes before the next council meeting as part of the grant process.
The fire chief said the department qualified by applying as a township and that the grant application is due in October. The city’s share is $10,000; White River Planning and Development will serve as the paid grant administrator (their fee comes from the grant). The chief said the department plans to request funds for a used small service apparatus (a service truck) to improve Insurance Services Office (ISO) points and to provide more cost-efficient response for many medical and service calls.
The chief noted the grant requires a separate bank account and a reimbursement-draw process (spend first, then submit for reimbursement). He asked for council support and said the city will likely adopt a resolution after the public hearing. If the application is not awarded, it can be recycled for the next round.
Two firefighters were recognized for completing Arkansas Fire Academy training earlier in the year.
