The Cherokee Village City Council heard an update March 20 on a proposed lease of the city fire station to the Suburban Improvement District (SID), in which SID officials described the charge as a ‘‘nominal fee’’ intended to cover insurance costs under a prior settlement.
Betsy Wah, general manager of the Suburban Improvement District, told the council the lease was prepared by SID attorneys to comply with the settlement’s requirement that the city may enter a lease for a nominal sum. Wah said the fee listed in SID’s packet was limited to insurance costs and that SID did not seek any additional payment beyond documented expenses. She urged council members to submit written questions so SID could compile answers and have the city attorney review the lease wording.
Wah recommended that council members document their concerns in writing rather than attempting to resolve legal questions in the meeting. She said SID would consolidate questions into a single email and coordinate responses through the city attorney. Council members did not vote on the lease at the meeting.
The council’s next step is to collect and forward written questions to the city attorney for formal review; any changes to the lease language were to be returned to SID for clarification before a future vote.
