Manchester recycles Christmas trees into free mulch; Arbor Day planting set for April 18

Assistant Director of Public Works Dave Pracht reported that 162 residents put out Christmas trees for collection during the first week of January and that Public Works and Republic Services handle additional same-week pickups and larger trees cut in half. Trees are chipped and converted into mulch, which the city offers free at Seibert Park.
Stephanie Hardesty, representing Parks, said Arbor Day will be Saturday, April 18. A post oak will be planted at 9:30 a.m. in honor of the bicentennial tree, followed by a seedling giveaway at 10 a.m. Hardesty said there will be no indoor event this year because the Maker’s Mart is being revamped.
Mayor Mike Clement asked about maintenance and lightning protection for the bicentennial tree; Dave Pracht and Mark Halpin said lightning protection was not installed because of cost, the tree is on MODOT property (not city-owned), staff removed honeysuckle and brush around the tree, and Public Works will add mulch under it soon.
