Local veterans form DAV chapter and plan Veterans Day event with schools and community support

Two local veterans asked the council for help promoting and supporting a Veterans Day program and introduced a newly formed Disabled American Veterans (DAV) chapter for the county.

Vandy Brenley, who said he created the Oyster Bayou Veterans Trust and helped establish a DAV chapter, told council members he is organizing a Veterans Day event on Nov. 11 that will include school programs, invited speakers, and a community meal at the fairgrounds. He said the school is participating (elementary students will create cards) and that organizers need lists of local veterans and logistical assistance so children have time to prepare materials.

“Pedigene Electrics has gave full support,” Brenley said, and he named Farm Bureau and local banks among early sponsors. Kevin Williams, the newly named DAV commander, said the chapter will provide veteran-service-officer support, transportation assistance and fundraising to help veterans with claims and needs. Williams said the chapter will meet monthly and is coordinating with other local veteran organizations.

Both speakers asked the council and community partners to help publicize the Nov. 11 program and to consider staging a larger parade for the nation’s 250th anniversary next year. Council members expressed support and encouraged coordination with local civic groups and chamber resources.

Organizers did not request specific city funding during the meeting but asked for outreach help and permission to use the fairgrounds for the event; sponsors and local groups were already lined up to provide food and other support.
