Airport director outlines $7.5 million plan for aviation maintenance training hub

Trevor Dawson, speaking for the airport commission, told the council the airport is negotiating with North Arc about rental space and is preparing an FAA grant application and plans that must be submitted by late November and Dec. 31, respectively, to support a potential Part 147 maintenance school.
Dawson estimated the facility needed for a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) training and service hub would be about $7.5 million and said the airport and education partners are exploring grant and matching funding sources, including education-related grants and FAA programs. He described the kinds of MRO work such a hub could attract — overhaul of turbine blades and other high-value maintenance activities — and said proximity to freight hubs like Memphis could make the area attractive to investors.
He also reported local outreach successes: a career fair at the airport drew about 230 students and the initial class for a maintenance training program is expected to be near capacity, with interest from local flight schools. Dawson said the city is balancing short-term housekeeping items with long-term planning for tenant needs and workforce development.
Council members did not take action on the item beyond hearing the report; staff said they will continue coordinating permits, bond and grant preparations with contractors and educational partners.
