Aspen council narrows Yogi’s park kitchen to four finalists, flags menu prices for subsidized space

The Aspen City Council on Jan. 26 narrowed a field of applicants for the city‑subsidized food space at Yogi’s park and asked finalists to return for formal presentations, emphasizing local experience, financial capacity and affordable kid‑menu pricing.

Councilmember Sam listed his top finalists and criteria, saying he focused on operators who are "well known in this community" as well as financial capability and menu price points. "The 4 that I'd like to bring back as finalists would be 5 20 Grill, Bamboo Bear, Jaffa, and Masala and Curry," Sam said.

Several council members urged attention to affordability for children and park users. "I think to myself... what is Aspen affordable?" Sam said, adding that a children’s meal under $20 felt appropriate in his view. Councilmember John pressed for kid‑menu price points to be below $20 in order to serve the park’s family users.

Councilmember Bill raised a related equity concern about subsidized rent: he said one applicant’s sample menu prices appeared higher than the operator’s unsubsidized menu in another location and asked why the city would subsidize rent for an operator charging the same or higher prices. "How is it fair to the community to allow someone to charge the same or more if we are giving them a subsidized rent?" he asked.

Councilmembers generally prioritized established local restaurateurs who understand Aspen’s market while also calling for complete applications and defensible sample menus. Several council members said they would like to see the finalists return to discuss financial qualifications and menu pricing in more detail; the council agreed to bring selected finalists back for formal presentations.
