Castine Selectboard approves anode purchase, delegates MMA vote and schedules WasteHub review

At its Sept. 23 meeting the Castine Selectboard approved several procedural items and scheduled follow-ups.
The board authorized the Town Manager to purchase anodes for dock sheet pilings up to $3,000. Derik told the board the town had ordered 12 anodes at a cost of $2,626.12 and that those, together with five anodes remaining in inventory, would require an additional seven anodes to complete protection of all affected sheet pilings. Roberta Boczkiewicz moved to authorize the Town Manager to make the anode purchase up to $3,000; Amy Gutow seconded and the motion passed 2–0.
Amy asked, “What do anodes do? Where do they go?” Derik and Harbormaster Scott Vogell explained: the anodes are roughly 36 inches long and 4 inches across and are fastened to sheet pilings to attract electrolytic current that otherwise accelerates piling deterioration.
Roberta moved and Amy seconded a motion delegating the Town Manager to vote on behalf of Castine at the Maine Municipal Association annual business meeting on Oct. 8–9; the motion passed 2–0. Derik noted the Town Office will be closed on those dates.
Derik said Michael Carroll of Municipal WasteHub will appear at the Nov. 17 Selectboard meeting to present options for the town’s recycling program and that the town’s local road assistance certification has been submitted to the State. He also reported that the Lighthouse lease signing is delayed while Tracy Lameyer provides proof of residency; a staff member named Mark was called out of town and that delayed documentation.
The board entered executive session to discuss a personnel matter under Title 1 MRSA ch.13 §405(6)(A) at 4:34 p.m.; the initial motion to enter was recorded 2–0 (Dan Leader was not present for that motion). The board exited that executive session at 5:35 p.m., with Roberta, Amy and Dan (via Zoom) voting to leave — recorded 3–0. The board then entered and left a second executive session about a real estate matter under Title 1 MRSA ch.13 §405(6)(C) (entry 5:36 p.m.; exit 5:57 p.m.), with votes recorded 3–0. The meeting adjourned at 5:58 p.m.
