Castine Selectboard reviews GEI dock study, prioritizes wave attenuation and dinghy storage

The Castine Selectboard on Sept. 23 reviewed a draft Town Dock Study by engineering firm GEI and accepted the Harbor Committee’s recommendation to focus first on short-term protections for the town’s waterfront.
Chair Roberta Boczkiewicz introduced the study and Town Manager Derik Goodine said the town will schedule a public informational meeting after receiving GEI’s final draft. The Harbor Committee has met in work sessions and recommended prioritizing items that address immediate safety and access needs.
Harbormaster Scott Vogell told the board that addressing wave action is the most urgent need. “The wave attenuation system is a must and the most important,” he said, adding that he is assembling cost estimates and recommendations. The committee also identified using the town’s Coastal and Shoreland (CDS) matching funds to expand the town float area to increase dinghy storage as a near-term priority.
Derik cautioned against completing short-term fixes that could be undone or duplicated during long-range work. He said the study should be used as a planning tool and that the town needs to watch for grant opportunities that could finance prioritized projects.
The Harbor Committee is scheduled to meet again on Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. to refine short-term priorities; the Selectboard said it will hold a public meeting to present visuals and the final GEI draft once available.
