Blackhawk County proclaims Junth a county holiday; organizers outline June 18–21 celebration

The Blackhawk County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a proclamation on June 16 recognizing Junth (Juneteenth) as a Blackhawk County holiday and invited residents to participate in community celebrations.
Reading the proclamation on behalf of Latana, a board member noted the federal and state recognition of Junth and the county’s long tradition of local observances. Community organizer Latana told the board the county is celebrating its 31st annual Junth this year and outlined events from Thursday, June 18 through Sunday, June 21 at Gates Park and Sullivan Park in Waterloo, including music, vendors, speakers and youth activities.
"We're celebrating our 31st annual Junth celebration," Latana said, urging residents to attend: "If you're not doing anything, come out to any of these events or all of them. We'd love to have you there." The organizer said about 35 vendors were committed so far and listed performers and special guests scheduled for the multi-day event.
Following the presentation, a motion for the proclamation was seconded and approved by voice vote. The board later took a photo with the organizers and discussed following up with a formal resolution and public outreach for the event.
The proclamation cites Junth’s significance in commemorating emancipation, local educational programming and community-led celebrations in Blackhawk County.
