Residents tell council they are torn on property-tax reform, complain about utility-bill penalties

Charles Loeb of Terrace Park discussed the proposed property-tax reform expected on the November ballot. He said he sympathized with measures to help people who need property-tax relief but worried the governor's proposal is "too extreme" and could force cuts to city services and layoffs. Loeb recommended that municipalities coordinate through the Florida League of Cities to offer a more moderate alternative for voters to consider.
Ann Martin said she pays two city utility bills — her own and her adult daughter's — and described a mismatch in payment windows that caused a $10 penalty on her daughter's bill despite payment within the due month. She asked the council to allow a short grace period so that payments made within the billed month are not penalized. City staff responded that someone would contact her and follow up on the discrepancy.
The council did not take immediate action on either public comment item but staff said they would follow up with Ms. Martin about her billing issue and will note Mr. Loeb's suggestion regarding League-of-Cities coordination.
