Beachwood volunteers and committee prep community garden, new applicant to be introduced June 2

Members of the Beachwood Environmental Shade Tree Committee said they are stepping up maintenance and volunteer coordination at the borough community garden.
At the May 18 meeting, Carl Schmidt said he and Maria Bird visited the garden on May 16; he installed rain barrels and hooked gutters to the barrels and Bird raked lot 2 to prepare beds for perennials. Chair Ellen Harrigan said she has been cleaning gutters of pine needles and noted she has begun using lot 10 to plant potatoes and corn and plans to plant okra in lot 1.
Schmidt said he had called a new applicant, Donna Hopkins, and arranged an introductory visit scheduled for June 2. He also reported he had not heard from last year’s gardener who managed lot 7.
The committee is also coordinating a supervised student-volunteer program. Chair Ellen Harrigan reported she has emailed Sue Minnock to obtain the required paperwork and is working with the Toms River High School Honor Society; volunteers would help weed empty plots and stone areas and would be supervised by a committee member, who would also provide water and cups.
The committee did not take a formal vote on personnel or plot assignments at the meeting; members said they will follow up with the prospective gardener after the June 2 introduction and continue routine maintenance tasks.
