Board agrees to apply donated funds to cover school lunch deficit after discussing collection limits

The Solon Springs School District Board of Education voted June 15 to apply designated donated funds toward the district’s school lunch deficit after staff described limits on pursuing unpaid balances and the board weighed outreach and funding options.

Board members discussed that state rules require schools to feed students and that small-claims collection for unpaid lunch balances is legally and practically constrained. Staff reported that they have reached out to families, mailed bills, made phone calls and offered application help; staff said some families still do not complete income verification forms that would qualify them for free or reduced-price meals.

A long-time donor (identified in the meeting transcript as Elizabeth Nichols) has previously given $5,000 and the board agreed to deploy donated funds for food-service needs and to target assistance to families as staff determines eligibility. During discussion, board members underscored the tension between covering costs and ensuring children are fed, describing the situation as a "catch-22" when families accumulate balances but still require meals.

The board moved and approved a motion to use the designated donated funds; the transcript records the motion and approval but does not include a roll-call tally. Staff was directed to determine which families will receive assistance from those funds.
