Laura Whipple, who lives at 301 Heritage Trail NE, told the council at the June 15 meeting that trees behind her property on city land were recently cut and that the removal has left her family’s yard exposed and removed habitat for birds and other wildlife.
Whipple described the trees as a natural privacy screen and asked the council not to make any final decisions without review. She requested that public works or park staff evaluate the site and that the council consider replanting fast‑growing species such as poplars or an appropriate mix of trees and shrubs to restore a natural buffer.
Her remarks focused on neighborhood privacy, the appearance of the north entrance to the city and the loss of wildlife shelter. Whipple said she has lived in New Prague since 2010 and conveyed that the trees were important to her family and to nearby residents. The mayor thanked her for the comment; staff said they would evaluate the location and report back to the council.
What happens next: Staff indicated they will evaluate the site and report options back to council for consideration; Whipple asked the council not to make any final decision without a review by staff.
