Select Board refers needs-assessment of town office and community center to Town Manager

The Wiscasset Select Board on March 17 heard a presentation from Artifex on a Town Office and Community Center needs-assessment and voted unanimously to refer the report to the Town Manager for a recommendation.
Ellen Angel presented the assessment, saying the municipal building that houses town administrative offices, police, fire and EMS is "well-maintained for its age and use" but faces space and site limitations. The report outlined options including: (1) moving town offices to a new building and renovating the existing building for public safety functions, (2) building a new combined facility that would house police, fire, EMS and town offices and selling the existing building, or (3) building a new fire/EMS facility and renovating the existing building for police and town offices.
After the presentation, Bill Maloney moved to refer the report to the Town Manager to return with a recommendation; the motion passed 5-0-0. The board did not adopt any specific preferred option at the meeting. The referral directs the Town Manager to review the report’s options and provide the board with a recommended path forward, which may include cost estimates, site considerations and proposed timelines for any future warrant articles or capital requests.
Town Manager Dennis Simmons is expected to report back with recommendations when available; the board will consider any recommended actions and associated funding in future meetings and at Town Meeting if needed.
