Board authorizes up to $1.27 million paving contract after lower-than-expected bids

Public works staff reported two bids for the FY2026 paving program that were, overall, about 10% lower than the prior year. Staff said the township is roughly $300,000 under its cost estimate and will retain contingency funds for possible overages such as pipe work.
The board moved to authorize the township manager to approve a paving contract with Long's Asphalt, Inc. for an amount not to exceed $1,271,615, subject to final solicitor review and required bonds and approvals. The manager and staff said the program will complete Phase Two of Hillenddale Road and the first phase of New Garden Road from Route 41 to Newark, with schedule dependent on school completion and municipal approvals; contractors indicated mid‑ to late‑August work is likely.
The motion carried on a voice vote.
