Selectboard authorizes Vermont Fish & Wildlife to use Volunteer Green for salmon releases

After a presentation by a Vermont Fish & Wildlife fisheries biologist, the Selectboard approved a motion to allow the agency and volunteers to use Volunteer Green as an access/release site for Atlantic salmon trap-and-truck operations this fall.
The Richmond Selectboard voted Sept. 3 to authorize the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife to use Volunteer Green and volunteers for scheduled Atlantic salmon trap-and-truck release events.
Bernie Pena, who introduced himself as a fisheries biologist with Vermont Fish & Wildlife out of the Essex Junction office, described the program: "we were trying to find another location that could basically support the release of these fish ... trap operation starts September 15th and goes through November," Pena said. He said the typical stocking in recent seasons was about 200 adult salmon and described logistics (vehicle access to water edge and frequency during peak runs).
Board members moved and seconded an authorization after the Richmond Land Trust confirmed the usual drop-off point is unavailable this year because of flood damage; the board then called the motion and recorded assent.
