Council OKs sign‑code change to allow larger freeway‑facing signs for big tenants

The Duarte City Council voted to adopt an amendment to the city’s development code for the Commercial Freeway (CF) zone to allow larger wall‑mounted and special ID signs for large tenants along the 210 freeway.
Associate planner Mena Abdul Ahad told the council staff found an oversight in the CF code that limited signage for large tenant spaces. Staff said Best Buy’s previous signage predated the CF code and that new large tenants — including the supermarket planned for the former Best Buy space — would be disadvantaged under current rules.
Under the amendment staff proposed, tenants 40,000 sq ft and larger may have a front wall sign up to 325 square feet, an additional wall sign up to 250 square feet, and up to four 25‑square‑foot special ID signs; staff provided exhibit drawings to show examples. "Staff recommends the city council adopt ordinance 2605 amending development standards related to the sign requirements in the CF zone," Abdul Ahad said.
Council members welcomed the code update as a pragmatic fix and noted staff worked with the prospective supermarket’s sign company to develop proposed graphics showing how large storefront signs would fit the building scale. The council opened and closed the public hearing with no substantive opposition and approved the ordinance.
