At its June 3 session, the Susanville City Council heard public comments, received staff updates and approved routine business.
Juanita Williams, who identified herself as representing The Salvation Army, outlined upcoming local programs and fundraisers: a Gary Phelps tournament and online auction, a donut donation event for first responders, a July summer camp that takes up to 50 children (family cost about $25 per camper), and a back-to-school shopping program in September that typically helps about 200 students, each receiving $150 for clothes. "We usually do around 200 children," Williams said.
Resident Martin Balding urged broader public input on a proposed truck/travel stop and urged the city to share cost estimates before moving forward. Balding raised potential city costs for police staffing and sewage, questioned the environmental review and responses and recommended a public straw poll. He said, "it appears that the EIR was written by artificial information, and also appears that the responses were written by artificial information, and also programmed to deny everything in it." The council did not take action on that item at this meeting; Balding’s comments were recorded during public comment.
On the consent calendar and procedural votes: council approved the meeting agenda at the start of the session and approved the consent calendar without objection. Later in the meeting council approved Resolution 26-65A5 to authorize emergency procurement for Well 3 repairs and voted unanimously to "receive" the report on Memorial Ballpark status.
The council announced its next meeting: June 17, 2026, open session at 5:00 p.m. Staff said they will follow up with the investigating entity (identified in the record as the state fire marshal/Cal Fire) on the ballpark fire investigation timeline and will bring a department update if requested.
