The Dickinson County Planning and Zoning Commission approved an amendment to the zoning for the parcel at 1515 Highway 86 in Lakeville Township to allow automotive sales use for Okoboji Boat Brokers with explicit restrictions. The commission’s 6-0 vote limited the site to two dealer plates, prohibited a car lot and barred automobile maintenance services on the property.
Megan Kardell, zoning administrator, read the ordinance language and noted the parcel historically allowed marine services but not a motor vehicle dealer license. Barry and Julie Van Iperen, representing Okoboji Boat Brokers, told the commission they do not intend to operate a car dealership; they said they need a dealer license primarily to purchase vehicles at auction and occasionally accepted a vehicle as a trade-in.
Commissioner David Besch recommended approving the use with the stated limitations; Commissioner Derek Lee seconded. No public correspondence or public comments were recorded on the item.
The commission’s action amends permitted uses for the parcel so future owners must comply with the restriction that only two dealer plates be issued and no on-site car sales lot or vehicle repair services be established.
