Council fills Parks & Recreation Commission seats and highlights high‑school ADU workforce program

At the May 12 regular meeting the City Council appointed four members to the Parks & Recreation Commission: Nicole Gardner (partial term), Jim Thor, Ellen Greggs and incumbent chair Dorothy Ellis. Each nominee described community or program experience; the council voted unanimously (3–0) to approve the appointments and City Clerk administered the oath.
Earlier, the council heard a presentation about a collaboration between Antioch High School students, Rebuilding Together and the Big Skills program to construct small accessory dwelling units (ADUs) on a school campus. Teacher and program leaders described hands‑on training in framing, electrical work, tile and concrete for students; the learning leaders gain resumes and stipends and the ADUs are intended to be low‑cost options for qualifying homeowners, with some units planned to be provided free to qualifying low‑income homeowners.
Council members and community commenters praised the program as a model for job training and possible ways to scale the concept through surplus city or church properties. The council directed staff to consider partnerships and to keep the commission roster active for upcoming parks programming and special-event planning.
