City accepts $4.3M MEEDC workforce grant for Monroe North conversion and mobility work

The commission unanimously approved acceptance of a $4.3 million Michigan Economic Development Corporation award under the Michigan Talent Partnership program to support redevelopment work in the Monroe North area.
Miss Rero, who introduced the item, said the city had applied for approximately $7 million and that the $4.3 million award will fund conversion work around Division and Ionia, the Fairbank stairs, and mobility improvements between the hill and the river. "We applied for this last year and this is how long these sorts of things take," she said, thanking colleagues for the opportunity to move the work forward.
The resolution to accept the grant and authorize execution of the agreement was approved by voice vote with no opposition recorded. Staff said the project is competitive and will proceed through the city's project coordination and contract award processes as design and procurement move forward.
What happens next: Staff will finalize the grant agreement execution and proceed with contracting and project delivery steps for the Monroe North improvements, returning to the commission as contract awards are required.
