Resident survey and temporary prairie seeding proposed for remediated Schaaf Road site

A resident survey and temporary restoration idea for the remediated Schaaf Road property were presented to the Village of Brooklyn Heights Council on March 3, 2026.
Resident Cookie Krizmanich reported she conducted door-to-door, email and paper surveys of neighbors around the Schaaf Road property currently undergoing remediation. She said she is compiling results and plans to present the findings at the next Council meeting. Krizmanich indicated she has explored planting native prairie seed on the roughly 4.6-acre remediated parcel as an interim measure to control weeds and provide environmental benefit while the Village and stakeholders consider long-term uses. She also said an Ad Hoc Environmental Committee meeting is scheduled for April 7 to further discuss options.
Engineer Jennifer Zoldak told Council the contractor anticipates completing the major excavation and soil haul-off by the end of March, with final restoration to follow when weather permits. Zoldak said she will notify Council as more information about grant awards (CVSG, OPWC) and timelines becomes available. Council and staff discussed the possibility of widening the survey distribution beyond Schaaf Road residents by including a link in the upcoming Village newsletter.
Next steps recorded: Krizmanich will provide the survey link to Community Services Director Thea Guilfoyle for newsletter inclusion; the Ad Hoc Environmental Committee will meet April 7; Engineering will report remediation progress as milestones are reached.
