Brooklyn Heights council adopts appointments, approves equipment purchases and routine payments

The Village of Brooklyn Heights Council approved multiple appointments and routine expenditures during its March 3, 2026 meeting, while sending one compensation ordinance back to the legal department for further review.
Council adopted Ordinance 20-2026 appointing Rebecca Gogol as chair of the Village Planning Commission and Ordinance 21-2026 appointing Jason Berger to the Planning Commission; both were adopted 4-0. Council also adopted Ordinance 22-2026 to amend Section 270.03 to extend the entry-level probationary period from six months to up to 12 months (sponsor: Schuckert), and Ordinance 24-2026 appointing Patty Tommer to the Charter Review Commission (adopted 4-0). Ordinance 25-2026 authorizing the Clerk/Treasurer to purchase a Bobcat L28 small articulated loader for the Service Department was adopted 4-0. Ordinance 26-2026 accepted NOPEC 2026 Energized Community Grant funds and was adopted 4-0.
Ordinance 23-2026, which would have amended Section 270.02 concerning regular compensation, was tabled after the mayor and council identified a conflict with a 1998 ordinance. Sponsor Berzins withdrew sponsorship and the Council voted to send the ordinance back to the Legal Department for review.
Council approved several routine motions tied to departmental operations and vendor payments. Motions carried included: excusing member Mark Lasky for illness; approving prior meeting minutes; paying Lorf's Custom Catering $1,467 for Meals on Wheels (motioned by Berzins, seconded by Schuckert); authorizing payment to ScanWorks for $1,119.03 for transfer of 2025 documents (motioned by Berzins, seconded by Presot); and increasing the standard bus rental rate to $50 per hour while keeping an airport flat fee of $40 (motioned by Hudson, seconded by Schuckert). The Council also approved allowing ODOT to perform limited nighttime work related to SR-176 in the Village to reduce daytime traffic impacts (motion by Berzins; second Presot).
The meeting concluded after a brief executive session on wages. Council adjourned following the closed session.
