Library staff announce full renovation of Holland Library; temporary express location to open

Library staff announced plans for a full renovation of the Holland Library, saying funding became available for the project in 2026 and that core services will continue at a temporary express location while work proceeds.

A library staff member (S1) noted the branch ‘‘opened up in 1971’’ and said it is now due for a comprehensive update after smaller upgrades in the 1990s. ‘‘It is definitely due,’’ another staff member (S2) said, adding the branch needs more meeting space and upgraded technology to match other locations in the system.

The county’s capital projects staff (S3) described a multi-year planning process that began in 2017 and involved concept plans, surveys and community feedback. The staff member said those inputs, plus annual CIP submissions and interdepartmental coordination, led to identification of funding for 2026.

Staff also announced the project team has contracted with Limeburgger Construction to carry out the work. ‘‘We are now working with Limeburgger Construction,’’ a staff speaker (S4) said, noting some of the project managers are local to the community.

Design details discussed at the meeting include a maker space — characterized in the presentation as a feature not currently available elsewhere in the system — and expanded outdoor space at the Holland location. ‘‘One feature that we don't have anywhere else, which is a maker space,’’ a staff member (S5) said. The speaker described the renovation as a ‘‘total transformation’’ of the site.

To maintain services during construction, staff said the library will operate an express location at the Green Ridge Recreation Center. A staff member overseeing the express site (S7) described the smaller temporary facility’s services: a browsable collection, checkouts, holds and returns, children’s activities and summer reading programs. The speaker said average visitor counts at the express site have been higher than expected and that staff have adapted to working from the recreation center.

Meeting materials and remarks emphasized community input in the planning process and the goal of enhancing the library as a community gathering space. Staff repeatedly framed the project as completing the systemwide update of library facilities.

Funding was identified for 2026, but the presentation did not provide a completion date for construction. Staff said core services will continue in the temporary location while the renovation proceeds.
