Lubec board members press for budget, lease and building fixes; superintendent reports staff changes and enrollments

Vice Chair Wanda Reed told the Maine School Administrative District No. 19 School Board on Nov. 6 that she would like to begin budget and curriculum committees, saying, “our kids are missing out,” and asked that the district budget reflect spending related to the LCOC lease.
Chair Patricia McCurdy responded that the LCOC is following the lease terms as written; School Committee member Richard Huntley Jr. said there remain actions required to address building conditions, including heating issues. Those concerns were raised as part of school-committee reports, not as formal motions.
Superintendent MaryEllen Day distributed an October revenue and expense report and said the board will need to reschedule its Jan. 1, 2026 meeting date; new available dates will be presented at the next meeting. Day also announced personnel changes: she accepted the resignation of speech therapist Teressa Peterson and said speech services will move to a virtual model. The superintendent appointed Katie Newman as athletic coordinator and named Alan Shepard as junior high boys and girls basketball coach.
Day provided student-placement counts: 17 students attending Machias Memorial High School, one student at CCLC, 19 attending Washington Academy; she also said five students are homeschooled for 2025–26 (up from eight in 2024–25) and that three students attend Elm Street School and three attend RMG under superintendent agreements. During public comment, Dana Bradley asked about problems with a new boiler; Huntley said the only issue had been with circulator pumps. Wanda Reed pressed to increase the athletic coordinator stipend; Day said stipends are set in the union agreement and that the stipend had been increased in 2024–25.
No formal votes were recorded on the budget or lease concerns; the board took no immediate action on heating or lease items during the meeting. The board adjourned at 6:54 p.m.
