The Belgrade Planning Board voted unanimously on Feb. 5 to forward draft ordinance language to the select board that would restrict phosphorus‑containing fertilizer and some pesticide use near surface waters. The draft would prohibit use within 100 feet of a great pond or river and within 75 feet of a stream, with the prohibition taking effect Jan. 1, 2027, and horizontal distances measured from the normal high‑water line or upland edge of a wetland.
Board members said the language reflected work from recent meetings and was intended to reduce nutrient loading to lakes and rivers. The board voted 5–0 to send the draft to the select board for their review and any necessary public process.
The select board will determine whether to place the amendment on a future warrant or take other steps for formal adoption.
