Belgrade senior council raises program access and volunteer concerns; craft attendee reported turned away

At the Belgrade Senior Resource Advisory Council meeting, members raised concerns about access to senior programs and volunteer coordination. The chair (transcript label: S1) said she was "not very pleased" that a recently bereaved participant had been turned away from a town-run craft session for not calling ahead.

"I do know somebody got turned away and I felt very bad when I heard," the Chair said, identifying Christine Pillsbury as the staff contact for reservations. Members agreed this outcome was undesirable for a program funded by town tax dollars and discussed options to reduce barriers for vulnerable residents.

The group also discussed ongoing volunteer-run efforts such as "Sand Buckets for Seniors," which the Chair said Kathy Leasser and Bob have been managing, and the planting of public planters at the post office and the Center for All Seasons. Jean Perkins and Cindy Clappetan were named as regular volunteers for watering and planting.

Members described both successes and challenges: holiday events and some trips had strong turnout, but maintaining planting beds and program continuity required committed volunteers; the Chair said personal funds have sometimes been used to buy flowers, though the town budget includes some funding for planters.

Why this matters: access problems and volunteer shortages affect whether seniors can participate in programs intended to reduce isolation and support wellbeing. The council identified outreach, clearer reservation procedures, and volunteer recruitment as priority follow-ups.

Next step: the Chair and Kristen planned to work on outreach and craft-program coordination, and members agreed to mention volunteer opportunities at walking groups to recruit new helpers.
