District administrators told the board that a straightforward conversion of their weighted percentage GPA to a 4.0 scale could make distinct student averages look identical and create confusion around class rank.
"The Marshwood High School transcript will show a 4.0 GPA," the superintendent said, noting two options: provide a nonweighted 4.0 solely for college-application clarity while keeping the weighted percentage for class rank and administrative use, or attempt a weighted 4.0 calculation that would create a second, competing GPA stream with unclear parameters.
Administrators explained the technical problem: the district’s percent-to-grade conversion bands (for example, 98–100 equates to a 4.0) can cause two students with slightly different percentages (100 vs. 98) to both appear as 4.0 on a converted scale even though the percentage-based calculation would separate their class rank. The issue becomes more complex when AP and honors weightings (10% and 5%, respectively) are applied.
To balance transparency and accuracy, the administration recommended showing both the weighted percentage (used for class rank) and a nonweighted 4.0 on transcripts, rather than attempting to define a weighted 4.0 scale at this time. "Colleges will pull our transcript apart and look at what they want to look at anyway," the superintendent said. The board did not adopt a formal policy change at the meeting but indicated support for making transcript information clearer for families while avoiding two competing internal metrics.
