Cristy Simons sworn in as Salem mayor; councilmembers sworn and banking signers updated

Cristy Simons was sworn in as mayor of Salem on Jan. 7 during a ceremony at the council meeting, and councilmembers Craig Sacco and Delys Snyder also took the Utah Oath of Office.
Jeffrey Nielson, City Recorder/Finance Director, administered the oath. After being sworn in, Mayor Simons thanked outgoing leaders and said she believes "many things can be accomplished when united with good people for a good purpose." The council recessed for a brief open house and refreshments following the swearing-in.
The council also formally recognized outgoing Mayor Kurt L. Christensen for eight years of service and Councilperson Kelly Peterson for four years; both received plaques and expressed appreciation to staff and residents.
On financial housekeeping, the council approved updating authorized signers on the city's Alta Bank account to reflect the new mayor. The approved signers are Mayor Cristy Simons, Finance Director Jeff Nielson and Treasurer Tammy Beck; the motion passed unanimously.
Why it matters: The swearing-in completes the leadership transition and ensures continuity on financial and administrative matters by updating bank signers and committee assignments. The council also announced portfolio assignments and scheduled a retreat for Jan. 29–31 to set priorities for the term.
