Glassport hears sewer-plant, UST removal and sewer-televising updates; channeling-wall bids set

Council received multi-part infrastructure updates at its Oct. 15 meeting that covered recent cleanup work, ongoing sewer maintenance and an upcoming construction bid process.

Councilman Angelo Norelli reported delinquent-collection figures and then President Anthony Colecchi, reading the report for Council Vice President Mark Stecak, told council the Department of Environmental Protection-required removal of an underground storage tank at the Public Works garage has been completed and that the borough is awaiting soil-sample results to determine whether remediation is needed. The channeling-wall replacement at the wastewater treatment plant was advertised in the Mon Valley Independent and bids will be opened in council chambers on Oct. 18; the project is slated to be awarded Nov. 19.

Separately, the borough reported that contractor Edge AI is televising 22 miles of sewer lines for the borough as part of a long-term-control plan; the project was reported at a cost of $290,400. The contractor has encountered access problems at several manholes, which borough staff said Public Works will help resolve. Council also heard that the diffuser-replacement project at the sewage plant is nearly complete and that the bypass for an aeration tank operated smoothly.

The council did not take new funding votes on these items at the meeting; the reports focused on contract oversight, schedule and next steps. The borough will report back after soil-sample results are received and after bids are opened and reviewed.
