BOSAC recommends 'Little Daisy Preserve' name for McCain parcel after debate over themes and duplication

The commission spent more than an hour discussing naming themes and process, with members weighing three broad approaches: names celebrating the land and its natural character, names reflecting local history (including recognition of women writers and workers), and whimsical or family-oriented names. Staff said the parcel is scheduled to open next spring, giving the commission time to finalize a recommendation and prepare signs.
Supporters of Little Daisy emphasized accessibility and a family-friendly tone. One commissioner said the name "puts a smile on your face" and argued a whimsical option could fit the parcel's planned accessible meadow and small trails. Other members urged consideration of historical or landscape-oriented names; examples discussed included "El Prada" (a Spanish-language meadow reference) and "Willow Bender," which some commissioners suggested for an internal trail or meadow feature.
The group also addressed a prior staff concern that the Little Daisy name overlapped with a mining-claim label; commissioners said that duplication with an obscure mining claim need not block use of a different, site-appropriate "Little Daisy" name and recommended clarifying that the recommendation is not honoring the mining claim.
After refining a short list and asking staff for any outstanding council guidance, BOSAC took a show-of-hands vote. The committee reported the tally as four in favor, one opposed and two abstentions and said it would forward the recommendation and the supporting rationale to Town Council.
Commissioners asked staff to include suggested trail and sub-feature names (several members proposed using Willow Bender for a trail and El Prada for the meadow) and to prepare a brief 'creative brief' explaining the purpose and desired tone of the name when the item goes to council. The recommendation is advisory; Town Council has authority for final approval.
BOSAC indicated it expects to present the short list to council at the July meeting so staff can proceed with sign planning ahead of the parcel opening next spring.
