Commission schedules NOAA storm-readiness presentation and discusses website, housing and groundwater study

At the Sept. 9 meeting the commission set a NOAA storm-readiness presentation for Nov. 13 and discussed website management, renewal of a Community Resilience Partnership, postponement of a fall program, and the possibility of seeking a grant for a new groundwater study.
The Georgetown Conservation Commission scheduled a NOAA Disaster Preparedness team presentation on storm readiness for Nov. 13, 2024 at 7 p.m. on Zoom. KELT indicated interest in co-sponsoring the program; Nancy Kinner will produce posters and Chair Jessica Weller will list the event in Tide.
Commissioners discussed website management: Jon Hagan created the current site and Lee Johnson has been maintaining it on WordPress. Kathy Gravino said she has been paying the WordPress fee and being reimbursed by the town; Nancy Kinner will assume the payment and Weller and Ruth Indrick will consider alternative, easier platforms.
The commission noted a completed housing needs assessment for the Georgetown Affordable Housing Initiative and discussed Georgetown’s 1990s groundwater study. Members raised groundwater supply as an important local issue and discussed applying for a Community Resilience grant—modeled on work Westport used—to fund a new groundwater study. Jessica Weller will request Westport’s report. Cheryl Swift urged that the commission ensure connections between open spaces are maintained for wildlife as part of planning.
The commission also recorded that a fall program on prehistoric sites at Georgetown High School is on hold until spring or summer 2025 and that the Community Resilience Partnership renewal will be submitted by Sept. 19.
