Board approves $142,652 mobile probation office to reach remote clients

The Inyo County Board on May 12 approved the purchase of a Ford Transit all‑wheel‑drive mobile probation unit for up to $142,652.01, intended to provide outreach and reentry services across the county.
Chief Probation Officer Jeff Thompson described the van as a mobile office that will carry staff and a "restart kit" of essentials (clothing, blanket, flashlight, water, toothbrush, Narcan and similar items) to support reentry clients in remote locations from Death Valley to Bishop. He said the van is a class B layout that can be driven with a regular Class C license, seats up to five (potentially seven with modifications), includes satellite internet capability, TV monitors and an awning for outreach events.
Thompson told the board that a paperwork omission on the RFP required a price correction to include sales tax and fees: "the agenda item has the cost of not to exceed $140,073. . . the total price actually should be $142,652.01," he said, asking the board to approve the corrected award to La Mesa RV of West Sacramento.
Supervisor Marshall moved the purchase and Supervisor Waddleton seconded; the motion passed by voice vote. The item will be financed from CalAIM reentry grant funds, Thompson said, and the probation department plans to wrap and brand the vehicle and hold a public unveiling once outfitting is complete.
The van purchase includes equipment and connectivity intended to support future mobile court, remote service delivery and reentry support in sparsely populated parts of the county. There was no public opposition recorded at the time of the vote.
