Commissioners approve up to $5,000 for Hyde Park neighborhood cleanup

Heather Williams, speaking for the Hyde Park neighborhood and Ball State’s Office of Community Engagement, asked the board on June 15 for logistical and financial help for a neighborhood cleanup planned for late July. Williams said neighbors identified about 24 problem lots—about 20% of the neighborhood—and asked to use county equipment to collect debris and a county truck or dumpsters to remove it.
"We're looking for use of the county highways Peterson truck and then some funds to pay for those tipping fees," Williams said, estimating tipping costs around $3,000 depending on the volume collected.
Commissioners and highway staff discussed operational details including training for equipment operators, the spread-out geography of lots (multiple pickup sites vs. single dumpster), and the need for property-owner releases to avoid county liability when removing debris left at the curb. Tommy H. of the highway department said training is needed to operate the Peterson truck but the department is willing to cooperate with logistics.
Commissioner Brand moved to approve an amount not to exceed $5,000 out of EDIT line #9 for cleanup costs; Commissioner Regan seconded and the motion passed by roll call vote. Commissioners directed staff to work with the highway department on logistics, coordinate property-owner outreach, and prepare a simple release form for property owners to sign.
